Linné´s Hand

BohĂĽslan, 1996

Eva Lootz´s sculpture “Linné´s Hand” is a site-specific project, located in Bohuslän between Hunnebostrand and Ulebergshamn. It combines the use of found granite blocks, easily available from the abandoned quarries throughout the región, together with five pools in cast concrete to form the shape of a hand with the planting of several trees, one at the end of each “finger” and one near the road approaching the site.
Being build in 1996, the work includes a homage to the botanist Linnaeus, to commemorate the 250 years of his travel to this part of Sweden and makes reference to the surprising presence of prehistoric remains in this part of the country. Five granite letters under the water surface, one in each basin, form the name of Linné and are surrounded by a circle of smaller letters which refer to a prehistoric alphabet known as the alphabet of the trees which begins: BETH, LUIS; NION, SAILLE, FEARN.
The work is meant to create a mark, a reference in space, a place for leisure and reflection, which through the varying aspects of its basins, stones and trees, mirrors the changing seasons of the year.
