A Farewell to Isaac Newton

South London Gallery, London, 1991

A number of objects covered with paraffin, which gives them a frozen appearance, creates a completely white space and produces a blinding effect similar to that caused by snow. All contours vanish and it is impossible for the eye to find something to hold onto. Breaking down the spectrum of light, Newton unfolded the fan of colours. In this piece, the fan of colours is “closed” and only white remains. The piece reminds us that our worldview is no longer the mechanistic one that Newton helped to establish.
