Khan Assad Bacha, Damascus, 2003

The project for Damascus was based on the singularity of Khan Assad Bacha, a mid-eighteenth century caravansary—inn for caravans—which is the largest in the Middle East. A feature of this building is its great structural clarity, as well as extraordinarily subdued ornamentation of great plasticity, consisting of alternating horizontal bands of light stone with bands of dark stone. The project consisted of drawing wavy lines of light on the floor diagonally crossing the space, using small glass containers which were filled with paraffin and a wick, thus turning them into little lamps. The wavy lines suggested flowing water, undulating sand dunes and passing caravans. At the same time, the oscillating light of the little lamps gives the space a sense of elasticity and movement.
